Peru has it all from spectacular hiking trails in the Andes to ancient cultures that add meaning to the traveler’s experiences in Latin America. Peru’s most popular site, Machu Picchu, is definitely a sight to behold with so much to learn about the Incan history and culture while modern times allow travelers to learn about the Quechua communities in the regions of Huaraz and Cusco. We are intentional with the trips that we offer in Peru given the workforce inequity issues that persist in the trekking tourism industry, especially those that involve the porters on the popular four-day Inca Trail trek to Machu Picchu. Our film project, KM 82, via The Porter Voice Collective, which is currently being screened privately has revealed the ongoing struggles of the Quechua porters who continue to fight for the decent and fair treatment of porters on the Inca Trail.
Hence, I have decided in 2019 to discontinue marketing the four-day Inca Trail trek based on our discoveries of systemic inequitable treatment of porters by many local and foreign owned trekking companies. Our hope is to educate the tourists through raising global awareness about the porters’ struggles on the Inca Trail through films, written publications and all other forms of media via the non-profit human rights organization, The Porter Voice Collective.
In the meantime, we are focused on marketing other treks such as Ausangate, Salkantay, Lares and Huayhuash to benefit lesser known local communities and reduce the overcrowding on the Inca Trail as a means of protecting the environment. All our treks below are inclusive of local women in various capacities within the trekking tourism industry.
