FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Why are you launching this training program?

As a seasoned traveler to Mongolia, I have noticed the lack of proper and formal training for guides. Guiding in Mongolia is often a freelance job. Most guides in Western Mongolia learn on their own and get hired through personal connections. Training programs can be cost-prohibitive for most guides in Western Mongolia as they are often only available in Ulaanbaatar. Over the years, there has been a shortage of guides in Western Mongolia as the job is seasonal. For female guides, there is a lack of support and mentorship for career advancement. Professional growth for them as guides is therefore limited. Anything can go wrong on a trek or a tour, and as the leader, the guide must be equipped with skills to address any issues that may arise. Our program aims to create resources, long-term mentorship, and support for female guides to succeed and grow professionally.

Who is organizing the training program?

My organization, Equity Global Treks, is partnering with Banu Travels, a female owned travel agency in Mongolia, to run this 3-day training program for women guides.

Who will be teaching the classes?

We will have professionals in the tourism industry with expertise in the subject to teach classes.

Is the program free for the female guides?

Yes. To encourage women to pursue guiding as a career, we want to attract as many women as possible to join our program.

How does this program benefit consumers/travelers?

A female guide's perspective is critical amidst male-dominated travel narratives on any trip. However, guides in general must also possess excellent guiding skills. With experienced and highly trained guides, consumers' travel experiences can only improve. I have encountered guides who lacked certain abilities, impacting the consumer experience, often due to a lack of training resources and support. We train women not only to possess expertise in guiding but also to develop tools that enable them to meet client expectations, fostering a meaningful traveler experience.

How can I support this initiative?

Option 1 - Join our tour.

When you join our tours in Mongolia, we will select a female guide from our training program to lead your tour; thus, you are directly creating jobs for the female guides from our program. Help us by sharing our tours with your network.

Option 2 - Become a program sponsor/donor.

We welcome sponsorships and donations to run our programs. Currently, we are covering the costs of the classes, but with sponsorships and donations, we can organize field training during the off-season to better prepare women for the high season. Please send us an email to discuss further at equity@browngaltrekker.com.
